What is Confirmation?
Confirmation is a pastoral and educational ministry that helps the baptized young person participate more fully in today’s Christian life. In a community of support and acceptance shared with the pastor, teachers, and peers, Confirmation helps the young person identify with the church and their own faith through worship, learning, and work. We gather together over two years, united in a commitment to walk with the Holy Spirit as we learn that faith isn’t a destination but a journey with Jesus. The culmination of our time together is a public profession of faith called “Affirmation of Baptism.” In preparation for this public statement of faith, students spend time together in Confirmation classes, service projects, and time together.
Confirmation is more than a membership class; we become members of God’s family and the Church in Holy Baptism. Confirmation is rooted in the theological, testifying to our lived human experiences where the Spirit is identified, named, and shared. Confirmation is an opportunity to say “YES!” to spirituality, faith, and to God’s grace-filled acts which have already been done on our behalf.
Confirmation is an exciting, positive ministry! We meet for worship, education, and service for two years, exploring our story, God's story, and how the two intersect. Confirmation is strongly encouraged and emphasized because the Church cares about young people and their faith development. Faith is a journey where our intentional engagement with God grows our own recognition of God’s love for us. When the confirmand is Confirmed, their journey does not end. Rather, Confirmation serves as a foundation to strengthen God’s call for everyone to live faithful and Christ-centered lives.
Some important changes for 2016-2017:
1) We're partnering with Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Old Tappan. Pastor John Holliday from PoP and Pastor Marc will co-lead our combined classes.
2) Christ Lutheran Church has changed when confirmation for our youths take place. We'll confirm our young people who have completed the program on Pentecost which is on June 4 in 2017.
