Ladies of Christ Lutheran Serve High Tea.....

It was a lovely Sunday afternoon – April 19, 2009 – when 112 ladies enjoyed High Tea hosted by the Care Committee of Christ Lutheran Church, Woodcliff Lake. The workshops necessary to present the High Tea began on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM when the ladies of the Care Committee gathered to begin preparing the canapés.  This was followed by another workshop on Sunday at 9:00 AM.   There were 700 canapés in all and just as many pastries assembled at these workshops.

On Sunday afternoon the fellowship room of the church was aglow in color; beautiful floral arrangement topped flowered tablecloths accompanied by napkins of almost every pastel shade imaginable. The canapés, that included 7 different varieties were placed on the table followed by platters of a large assortment of pastries and, of course, freshly brewed tea! Many of the ladies attending the tea wore a favorite hat, as well as gloves.  It was expected in the Victorian era that a hat be worn to such an event.  Some of the hats worn by the ladies went back 50+ years.

Our guest speaker for the afternoon was Kim Hendrickson who is well known in our area having taught classes at the Ridgewood and Ramsey adult education programs. She is a frequent speaker at culinary events throughout the New York area and has been involved in cookbook publishing for over 20 years.  Kim is also a regular instructor at the John Campbell Folk School in North Carolina.

Following her presentation on the customs of the Victorian era and the history and etiquette of serving tea, Kim was asked to present 2 prizes; one for the prettiest hat and one for the most unique.  Mary Zeigler won for the prettiest hat that was a “Gone with the Wind” style large-brimmed straw hat decorated with pretty flowers.  Miss Samantha, who is 12 years old, won for the most unique.  She wore a floor length dress with a flowered bodice and a pretty bonnet with a wide ribbon that tied under her chin.

The High Tea was a huge undertaking.  However, under the guidance of Barbara Meyer, the Committee Chairwoman, and Judy Trembath’s expertise on canapés, their recipes and preparation -- and not to be forgotten the ladies of the Care Committee who gave many hours to bring it all together – the event was an afternoon of enjoying the company of women friends, sharing good food and having fun doing it.
